What is Sea of Time – TOHOKU ?

On March 11, 2011, the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami struck the Tohoku (Northeastern) region, followed by a nuclear disaster. This catastrophic event claimed the lives of 18,420 people, including those who remain missing. In response to this tragedy, contemporary artist Tatsuo Miyajima (https://tatsuomiyajima.com/) conceived the Sea of Time – TOHOKU project in 2015. This project aims to preserve the memory of the disaster while offering hope for the future.
The artwork will feature 3,000 LED numerical displays embedded within a massive water basin measuring 40 meters by 22.5 meters. These LEDs represent the participation of 3,000 individuals—both those directly affected by the disaster and those who hold the Tohoku region in their thoughts. Through this work, Miyajima provides visitors with a profound space and time for reflection on “life” and the precious moments shared with loved ones.

About the Museum that Will House the Artwork

A dedicated museum is being planned to permanently exhibit this monumental work. Designed by architect Tsuyoshi Tane (https://at-ta.fr/), the museum will be built along the coastline of Fukushima, in the town of Tomioka. Tomioka suffered severe damage from the earthquake and was later completely evacuated due to the nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Power Plant. For six years following the disaster, the area was entirely off-limits. Although decontamination efforts have made it habitable again, only about 13% of its former residents have returned. This project not only serves as a memorial but also addresses unprecedented social challenges faced by humanity.

Where Is the Site?

Tomioka Town, the planned site for the museum, is located along the Pacific coast of Fukushima Prefecture in Japan’s Tohoku region. The site is approximately a three-hour drive from central Tokyo.
