What "Sea of Time - Tohoku" aims for

Fostering empathy for others and creating opportunities to confront life

The blinking lights of each LED counter gadget, symbolizing the eternity of life, embody the hopes and dreams of various individuals. As viewers gaze at the gently swaying waves of light, they will likely contemplate their loved ones, life and death, and the very essence of life itself. Through the artwork "Sea of Time - TOHOKU," we aim to foster empathy for others different from ourselves and to create a space where each individual can confront life and cultivate the vitality to live.

The transmission of experience and memory

We will create a space where visitors can experience the thoughts of the 3,000 people* who participated in the production of "Sea of Time - TOHOKU." Through empathy with the thoughts and experiences of others, we will pass on the experiences and memories of the Great East Japan Earthquake and the complex disaster caused by the earthquake, tsunami, and the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident to future generations. We also aim for this to be a place where each of us living through disasters can continue to think about the future.

An entry point to discovering the "present" of Tohoku

We actively engage in initiatives that foster diverse relationships between people, between people and towns, and between people and activities. We do this by collaborating with various individuals and organizations, including artists, designers, NPOs, businesses, government bodies, and residents, who are active in the Tohoku coastal region. Through these activities, we create opportunities for people around the world to encounter the "present" of Tohoku and Fukushima, to experience the layers of memory, history, and culture accumulated in this land, and to continue learning about life and death, life itself, and peace.
