This is an art project involving 3,000 people.

The work "Sea of Time – TOHOKU"
Each LED of the numbers blinks,
It embodies the hopes and dreams of 3,000 participants.

A museum will be constructed in Tomioka Town, Fukushima Prefecture, to permanently install "Sea of Time – TOHOKU".
While quietly gazing at the artwork, I thought about that important person in my life and about life itself.
It creates a "time" and "space" for reflection.

What is the "Sea of Time - Tohoku" project?

Triggered by the Great East Japan Earthquake, this art project was created by contemporary artist Tatsuo Miyajima with the desire to commemorate the victims, preserve memories of the earthquake, and together build the future of Tohoku, in collaboration with people living in Tohoku and those who care about the region.

Based on the concepts "It keeps changing," "It connects with everything," and "It continues forever," Miyajima, who consistently expresses life and death and the nature of life using LED digital counters that symbolize the eternity of life, is working on his artwork "Sea of Time - TOHOKU" in this project, engaging with 3,000 people.

Creating a space to foster empathy for others and to confront the meaning of life.

Through the work "Sea of Time - TOHOKU," we aim to cultivate imagination for others who are different from ourselves and to create a space where each individual can foster the vitality to live while confronting life.

The transmission of experience and memory

Through imagination directed towards the experiences of others, we aim to connect to the transmission of experiences and memories of the Great East Japan Earthquake and the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, and to be a place where each of us living through this disaster can continue to contemplate the future.

An entry point to discovering the "present" of Tohoku

We will collaborate with various individuals and organizations, including artists, designers, NPOs, businesses, government bodies, and residents active in the Tohoku coastal region, to create opportunities for people around the world to encounter Tohoku's current activities, experience the layered memories, history, and culture of this region, and continuously learn about life and death, existence, and peace.
