Time Setting Workshop at Hara Museum ARC: "Sea of Time - Tohoku" Project

タイム設定ワークショップin原美術館ARC 〜「時の海 – 東北」プロジェクト〜

Workshop and Demonstration Exhibition of the Artwork Held Simultaneously! ——

On Saturday, September 24, 2022, a time-setting workshop for the "Sea of Time - Tohoku" project will be held at Hara Museum ARC in Shibukawa City, Gunma Prefecture.

This will be the second workshop of the year, held at Hara Museum ARC, where Miyajima's artwork "Chain of Life," which was a permanent exhibition at the Hara Museum (Shinagawa, Tokyo), has been relocated and continues to be exhibited.

Furthermore, a demonstration exhibition of "Sea of Time - Tohoku" using a portion of the LEDs created to date will also be held simultaneously.

Through the time-setting workshop, why not take some time to reflect on your feelings for Tohoku or for individual lives, engaging in dialogue with Tatsuo Miyajima, your family and friends, or other participants?
And as you gaze at the demonstration exhibition of "Sea of Time - Tohoku," an artwork where each piece flickers differently, carrying the thoughts of various people, why not spend some quiet time contemplating your loved ones and the meaning of life?

We invite you to participate.

What is "Sea of Time - Tohoku" Time Setting?

The 3,000 LED numbers of "Sea of Time - Tohoku" each count down at a different speed.

In "Time Setting," participants can set the speed at which the numbers 9, 8, 7, 6... change to their desired duration (from 0.2 seconds to 120.0 seconds).
The LED numbers count down from "9" to "1," then "0" is not displayed, the LED turns dark, and then returns to "9," repeating this movement. This flickering of numbers symbolizes the perpetuity of life.

This workshop is an interactive workshop where Tatsuo Miyajima and participants share the time setting duration and episodes related to the Great East Japan Earthquake.
As one of the artists of this project, each participant entrusts their thoughts to a single LED through time setting, and these individual LEDs come together to form one large artwork.

Workshop Content

After an explanation of the artwork by Tatsuo Miyajima, participants will fill out a form with their desired time setting numbers and their thoughts embedded in those numbers, as well as their feelings for Tohoku. Based on this content, Miyajima will listen to their stories.
