The "Sea of Time – Tohoku" project's time setting workshop is scheduled to be held on Saturday, November 12, 2022, in the Jobutsu district of Kunisaki City, Oita Prefecture.
The Jobutsu district, where this workshop will be held, has a high percentage of elderly residents. Therefore, thorough measures against COVID-19 will be implemented, and participation will be limited to residents of Kunisaki City. We appreciate your understanding.
The Jobutsu district of Kunisaki City is the permanent installation site of Tatsuo Miyajima's work "Hundred Life Houses," which was presented at the Kunisaki Peninsula Art Festival (2014). This artwork was also created with the participation of 100 people, including residents of the Jobutsu district. The numbers on the LED gadgets glowing inside the 100 "small houses" continue to blink in various rhythms even today.

Through this time setting workshop, why not take some time to reflect deeply on your feelings for Tohoku, for your loved ones, and for the preciousness of every life, while conversing with Tatsuo Miyajima, your family, friends, or other participants?
People of all ages, from small children to adults, are welcome to participate.
We look forward to the participation of all residents of Kunisaki City.

What is "Sea of Time – Tohoku" Time Setting?
The 3,000 LED numbers of "Sea of Time – Tohoku" each count down at different speeds.
In "Time Setting," participants can set the speed at which the numbers change (9, 8, 7, 6...) to their desired duration (from 0.2 seconds to 120.0 seconds).
The LED numbers count down from "9" to "1," then "0" is not displayed, the light goes dark, and then it returns to "9," repeating this movement. The blinking of these numbers symbolizes the perpetuity of life.
This workshop is an interactive session where Tatsuo Miyajima and participants share the number of seconds for the time setting and episodes related to the Great East Japan Earthquake.
Participants, as artists of this project, entrust their thoughts to a single LED through time setting, and together these thoughts form one large artwork.
Workshop Content
After an explanation of the artwork by Tatsuo Miyajima, participants will fill out a form with the time setting number and their thoughts on that number and their feelings towards Tohoku. Based on these entries, Miyajima will engage in conversation with them.
*The workshop will be conducted with thorough COVID-19 measures to ensure a safe and secure environment. However, depending on the spread of infections, there is a possibility of postponement or cancellation.
*Content may be subject to change.
