Workshops to be held in the Tohoku coastal area. The 4th installment is Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture!
After the COVID-19 pandemic, in-person workshops resumed last year. This year, we will again visit various places across Japan, focusing on the Tohoku area, engaging in direct dialogue with people we meet in each location, and listening to their various thoughts and feelings.
On Sunday, July 23, 2023, we will hold a time-setting workshop for the "Sea of Time - Tohoku" project at the "Hachinohe Art Museum" in Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture.
The Hachinohe Art Museum is a new type of museum concepted as an "art farm for encounters and learning," actively creating opportunities for citizens to learn together with artists, specialists, and museum staff, promoting art education for children through school partnerships, and engaging in collaborative projects with other industries and fields.
This time, the "Giant Room," a plaza-like symbolic space of the Hachinohe Art Museum, will be the workshop venue.
Through the time-setting workshop, why not take your time to reflect on your thoughts about Tohoku and the lives of individuals, while conversing with Tatsuo Miyajima, your family and friends, or other participants?
The exhibition "Beautiful HUG!" is currently being held at the Hachinohe Art Museum. Please join us in conjunction with the exhibition.
We look forward to your participation.

What is the "Sea of Time - Tohoku" project?
Based on the concepts of "it continues to change," "it connects with everything," and "it lasts forever," contemporary artist Tatsuo Miyajima, known for his works using digital counters, created this art project with the hope of commemorating the victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake, preserving the memory of the disaster, and building the future of Tohoku together. He collaborates with people living in Tohoku and those who care about Tohoku.
The artwork, envisioned as a giant pool with 3,000 digital counters counting from "9 to 1," is created by 3,000 individuals, each setting the counting speed of an LED number to their desired time. Since 2016, workshops have been held in various locations, primarily in Tohoku, to meet participants, and activities continue with the goal of completing the artwork in 2027.
Currently, the number of participants has reached 2,284 (as of July 25, 2023).
What is "Sea of Time - Tohoku" Time Setting?
Each of the 3,000 LED numbers in "Sea of Time - Tohoku" counts down at a different speed.
In "Time Setting," participants can set the speed at which numbers switch (9, 8, 7, 6... ) to their desired number of seconds (from 0.2 seconds to 120.0 seconds).
The LED numbers count down from "9 to 1," then "0" is not displayed, and the light goes dark before returning to "9" and repeating the movement. This blinking of numbers symbolizes the continuity of life.
This workshop is an interactive workshop where Tatsuo Miyajima and participants share the time setting in seconds and episodes related to the Great East Japan Earthquake.
Participants, as artists of this project, entrust their thoughts to each LED through the time setting, and these thoughts combine to form one large artwork.
