Workshops to be held in a port town where you can feel the sea breeze!
On Saturday, September 23, 2023, as part of the "Seaside Cinema Project" held at Ukedo Fishing Port in Namie Town, Fukushima Prefecture, we will hold a time setting workshop for the "Sea of Time - Tohoku" project.
The "Seaside Cinema Project" is an activity that aims to revitalize the region and build communities by creating a place for people of all generations to interact while watching movies amidst the rich nature of Namie Town.

What is the "Sea of Time - Tohoku" project?
Based on the concepts of "it continues to change," "it connects with everything," and "it lasts forever," contemporary artist Tatsuo Miyajima, known for his works using digital counters, created this art project with the wish of commemorating the victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake, preserving the memory of the disaster, and building the future of Tohoku together. It is created in collaboration with people living in Tohoku and those who care about Tohoku.
The work, which envisions 3,000 digital counters counting from "9 to 1" installed in a huge pool, involves 3,000 people, with each participant setting the counting speed of the LED numbers to their desired time. Since 2016, workshops have been held throughout Japan, primarily in Tohoku, to meet participants, and activities are continuing with the goal of completing the work in 2027.
Currently, the number of participants has reached 2,284 (as of July 25, 2023).
What is "Sea of Time - Tohoku" time setting?
Each of the 3,000 LED numbers in "Sea of Time - Tohoku" counts down at a different speed.
In "Time Setting," participants can set the speed at which the numbers change (9, 8, 7, 6, ...) to their desired number of seconds (from 0.2 seconds to 120.0 seconds).
The LED numbers count down from "9 to 1," then "0" is not displayed and it becomes dark, before returning to "9" and repeating the cycle. This blinking of numbers symbolizes the perpetuity of life.
This workshop is a dialogue-based workshop where Tatsuo Miyajima and participants share the time setting in seconds and anecdotes related to the Great East Japan Earthquake.
As an artist in this project, each participant entrusts their thoughts to a single LED through the time setting, and these come together to form one large work of art.
