First Workshop to be held at "Tomioka Town Office", the base for "Sea of Time - Tohoku" project activities!

On Sunday, September 1, 2024, the first Time Setting Workshop will be held at the "Tomioka Town Office."

With the cooperation of members involved in artistic and cultural activities and childcare support activities based in Tomioka Town, we will collaborate on the planning and operation of the workshop.

Furthermore, this time we have created a framework that allows even those who have previously set their times to participate, challenging new dialogues among participants through the creation of "Sea of Time - Tohoku" artworks (※However, previously set times cannot be changed).

Through the Time Setting Workshop, why not take your time to reflect on your thoughts about Tohoku and the lives of individuals, while engaging in dialogue with Tatsuo Miyajima, your family, friends, or other participants?

What is the "Sea of Time - Tohoku" project?

Based on the concepts of "it changes continuously," "it connects with everything," and "it lasts forever," contemporary artist Tatsuo Miyajima, known for his works using digital counters, created this art project to mourn the victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake, preserve the memory of the disaster, and together build the future of Tohoku, in collaboration with people living in Tohoku and those who care about Tohoku.

The artwork, which envisions 3,000 digital counters displaying "9-1" installed in a massive pool, involves 3,000 people. Each participant sets the speed at which the LED numbers count down to their desired time. Since 2016, the project has been holding workshops mainly in Tohoku and throughout Japan, meeting participants and aiming to complete the artwork by 2027.
Currently, there are 2,517 participants (as of March 11, 2024).

What is the Time Setting Workshop?

Each of the 3,000 LED numbers in "Sea of Time - Tohoku" counts down at a different speed.
In "Time Setting," participants can set the speed at which the numbers 9, 8, 7, 6... change to their desired time in seconds (from 0.2 to 120.0 seconds). The LED numbers count down from "9 to 1," and when "0" is not displayed, it darkens, then returns to "9" and repeats the movement. This blinking of numbers symbolizes the perpetuity of life.
This workshop is a dialogue-based workshop where participants share their time settings and episodes related to the Great East Japan Earthquake with Tatsuo Miyajima.
Participants, as artists of this project, entrust their thoughts to each LED through time setting, and these thoughts gather to form one large artwork.
