From October 24, 2024 (Thursday), "Time Setting Days" will begin at the Sea of Time - Tohoku Project Tatsuo Miyajima Office Co., Ltd. Tomioka Town Office.

We will start "Time Setting Days" as an opportunity to participate in the Sea of Time - Tohoku Project's time setting workshop on weekdays, held at the "Tomioka Town Office" which opened in July this year.
If it was difficult for you to participate in weekend workshops, please consider taking this opportunity to join us.

At the venue, materials introducing the past and future activities of the "Sea of Time - Tohoku" project are displayed, along with LED counters that will become part of the actual artwork.
During the time setting, while you observe a demonstration artwork, our staff will explain the purpose of this project and listen to the seconds you wish to set for the time and the thoughts you put into it.

What is Tsukinoshita Art Center?
It is a small cultural activity that started in Tomioka Town.
We want to create a place and opportunity to shape the small ideas that emerge from creating something with someone, talking with new people, or sometimes quietly doing research alone. We are currently operating by borrowing the Sea of Time - Tohoku Project Tatsuo Miyajima Office Co., Ltd. Tomioka Town Office.
Open days are held every Thursday from 15:00 to 21:00. Various events are held every week, including exhibitions of "Sea of Time - Tohoku" demonstration works, an ART BOOK corner, and a "Let's Make a Full Moon" workshop.

What is the "Sea of Time - Tohoku" project?

"It continues to change," "It connects with everything," "It lasts forever." Based on these concepts, contemporary artist Tatsuo Miyajima, known for his works using digital counters, created an art project in collaboration with the people living in Tohoku and those who care about Tohoku. This project aims to commemorate the victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake, preserve the memory of the disaster, and build the future of Tohoku together.

The artwork, envisioned to consist of 3,000 digital counters counting "9 to 1" installed in a giant pool, is created with the involvement of 3,000 people, each setting the speed at which the LED numbers count to their desired time. Since 2016, workshops have been held mainly in Tohoku and across Japan, meeting participants, and activities continue with the goal of completing the artwork in 2027.
Currently, the number of participants has reached 2,603 (as of October 7, 2024).

What is the Time Setting Workshop?

Each of the 3,000 LED numbers in "Sea of Time - Tohoku" counts down at a different speed.
In "Time Setting," participants can set the speed at which numbers change (9, 8, 7, 6...) to their desired number of seconds (from 0.2 to 120.0 seconds). The LED numbers count down from "9 to 1," then "0" is not displayed and the light goes dark, only to return to "9" and repeat the cycle. This blinking of numbers symbolizes the perpetuity of life.
This workshop is a dialogue-based workshop where Tatsuo Miyajima and participants share the number of seconds for time setting and anecdotes related to the Great East Japan Earthquake.
As an artist in this project, each participant entrusts their thoughts to a single LED through time setting, and these individual contributions gather to form one large artwork.
