We will be participating in "[First-time] Yonomori Picnic" on Sunday, September 29, 2024, at Yonomori Park in Tomioka Town, Fukushima Prefecture!
We will set up a booth at the venue, displaying materials that introduce the past and future activities of the "Sea of Time - Tohoku" project, as well as an LED counter that will be part of the actual artwork.
Furthermore, those who support the "Sea of Time - Tohoku" project and wish to participate in "Time Setting"* can do so on the spot.
Please take this opportunity to join us with your family and friends!

What is the "Sea of Time - Tohoku" project?
Based on the concepts "It constantly changes," "It connects with everything," and "It lasts forever," contemporary artist Tatsuo Miyajima, known for his works using digital counters, created this art project with the hope of commemorating the victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake, preserving the memory of the disaster, and building the future of Tohoku together. It is a collaborative effort with people living in Tohoku and those who care about Tohoku.
The artwork, envisioned to consist of 3,000 digital counters counting from "9 to 1" installed in a giant pool, is created through the involvement of 3,000 people, with each participant setting their desired speed for the LED numbers to count down. Since 2016, workshops have been held primarily in Tohoku and across Japan, connecting with participants. The project aims to be completed in 2027.
As of September 1, 2024, there are 2,567 participants.
What is the Time Setting Workshop?
Each of the 3,000 LED numbers in the "Sea of Time - Tohoku" counts down at a different speed.
In "Time Setting," participants can set the speed at which the numbers 9, 8, 7, 6... change to their desired duration (from 0.2 seconds to 120.0 seconds). The LED numbers count down from "9 to 1," then "0" is not displayed and it goes dark, returning to "9" and repeating the motion. This blinking of numbers symbolizes the perpetuity of life.
This workshop is a dialogue-based workshop where Tatsuo Miyajima and participants share the set time in seconds and stories related to the Great East Japan Earthquake.
As artists of this project, participants entrust their thoughts to each LED through Time Setting, and these individual contributions come together to form one large artwork.
