Time Setting Workshop in Naoshima: The "Sea of Time - Tohoku" Project

タイム設定ワークショップin直島〜「時の海-東北」プロジェクト〜

Naoshima, the birthplace of the sister work "Sea of Time '98" —

On Saturday, July 30 and Sunday, July 31, 2022, a time setting workshop for the "Sea of Time - Tohoku" project will be held at "Benesse Art Site Naoshima" located in the Seto Inland Sea.

Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the in-person "time setting" had been cancelled until now.

While continuing to consider the social situation, we will resume in-person workshops this summer, visiting various regions and engaging in direct dialogue with participants in each location.

First, this year's inaugural destination is Naoshima, the birthplace of the sister work "Sea of Time '98." Like "Sea of Time - Tohoku," this is a region with participatory artworks where workshops were held for time setting.

What is valued in the "Sea of Time - Tohoku" project's time setting workshop is to have ample time for dialogue between each participant and Tatsuo Miyajima. During the dialogue, we listen intently to stories of experiences from that day, the reasons for participating in the workshop, and the thoughts embedded in the designated seconds for the time setting and the numbers themselves.

Why not take the time to reflect on your feelings for Tohoku, your thoughts on each individual life, and your thoughts for that special person, while engaging in dialogue with Tatsuo Miyajima, your family, friends, or other participants?

Please join us.

What is "Sea of Time - Tohoku" time setting?

The 3,000 LED digits of "Sea of Time - Tohoku" each count down at a different speed.

Setting the speed at which the numbers switch—9, 8, 7, 6...—to the desired number of seconds (from 0.2 seconds to 120.0 seconds) is called "time setting."

This workshop is a dialogue-based workshop where participants share with Tatsuo Miyajima the seconds for their time setting and episodes related to the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Through time setting, each participant entrusts their thoughts to a single LED, and these collectively form one large artwork.

The LED numbers count down from "9 to 1," then "0" is not displayed and it darkens, before returning to "9" and repeating the cycle. This blinking of numbers symbolizes the continuity of life.

After the time setting, there will also be an opportunity for those who wish to view the artwork "Sea of Time '98" with us.
