As part of 'Beppu Art Month 2022', held on Sunday, November 13, 2022, in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture, we will host a time-setting workshop for the "Sea of Time - Tohoku" project.
Beppu Art Month is a civic cultural festival that brings together many cultural and artistic events in Beppu City, and this year marks its 13th anniversary.
Oita Prefecture is a place with strong ties to Tatsuo Miyajima. He was invited by NPO BEPPU PROJECT, and in 2006, he created and presented 'Counter Voice in the Earth' in Beppu City. In the Jobutsu district of Kunisaki City, 'Hundred Life Houses,' created through workshops with local residents, is permanently installed.
Through the time-setting workshop, why not spend some time reflecting deeply on your thoughts about Tohoku, your loved ones, and the preciousness of each life, while engaging in dialogue with Tatsuo Miyajima, your family, friends, or other participants?
We look forward to your participation.

What is "Sea of Time - Tohoku" Time Setting?
Each of the 3,000 LED numbers in "Sea of Time - Tohoku" counts down at a different speed.
In "Time Setting," participants can set the speed at which numbers change, such as 9, 8, 7, 6..., to their desired number of seconds (from 0.2 to 120.0 seconds).
The LED numbers count down from "9 to 1," then "0" is not displayed, the light darkens, and then it returns to "9," repeating the motion. This blinking of numbers symbolizes the perpetuity of life.
This workshop is an interactive workshop where participants share with Tatsuo Miyajima their preferred time settings and stories related to the Great East Japan Earthquake.
As one of the artists of this project, each participant entrusts their thoughts to one LED through the time setting, and together these form one large work of art.
Workshop Content
After an explanation of the artwork by Tatsuo Miyajima, participants will fill out a form with their desired time setting numbers and their thoughts embedded in those numbers, as well as their feelings towards Tohoku. Based on these entries, Miyajima will engage in a conversation with them.
*Measures against COVID-19 will be implemented to ensure a safe and secure operation. However, there is a possibility of postponement or cancellation depending on the spread of the infection.
