12 years since the Great East Japan Earthquake. Thinking of those people at that time.
On Saturday, March 11, 2023, a time setting workshop for the "Sea of Time - Tohoku" project will be held at "YAU STUDIO" in Yurakucho, Tokyo.
The "Sea of Time - Tohoku" project is an art project created by contemporary artist Tatsuo Miyajima, known for his works using digital counters, based on the concepts of "it continues to change," "it connects with everything," and "it lasts forever." He hopes to console the victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake and pass on the memory of the disaster, working together with people living in Tohoku and those who care about Tohoku.
The planned artwork involves 3,000 digital counters counting from "9 to 1" installed in a giant pool. It will be created with the involvement of 3,000 people, with each participant setting the speed at which the LED numbers count to their desired time. Since 2016, the project has been holding workshops mainly in Tohoku and across the country, meeting participants, and continuing activities with the goal of completing the artwork in 2027.
Currently, the number of participants has reached 1,722 (as of February 6, 2023).
This is the first time for the "Sea of Time - Tohoku" project to hold a face-to-face workshop with a large number of participants in an urban area. This time, following the online workshop in autumn 2021, it will be held with sign language interpretation.
Through the time setting workshop, why not take your time to reflect on your thoughts for Tohoku and the lives of individuals, while conversing with Tatsuo Miyajima, your family and friends, or other participants?
We look forward to your participation.

What is "Sea of Time - Tohoku" Time Setting?
Each of the 3,000 LED numbers in "Sea of Time - Tohoku" counts down at a different speed.
In "time setting," participants can set the speed at which the numbers 9, 8, 7, 6... change to their desired duration (from 0.2 seconds to 120.0 seconds).
The LED numbers count down from "9 to 1," then "0" is not displayed, the light turns off, and then returns to "9," repeating this movement. This blinking of numbers symbolizes the perpetuity of life.
This workshop is a dialogue-based workshop where Tatsuo Miyajima and participants share the time setting in seconds and episodes related to the Great East Japan Earthquake.
As an artist in this project, each participant entrusts their thoughts to one LED through time setting, and these come together to form one large artwork.
