Time Setting Workshop in Kamaishi ~ "Sea of Time - Tohoku" Project ~

タイム設定ワークショップ in 釜石 〜「時の海 – 東北」プロジェクト〜

Workshop to be Held in the Coastal Area of Tohoku. The 3rd installment is in Kamaishi City, Iwate Prefecture!

After the COVID-19 pandemic, in-person workshops resumed last year. This year, we will once again visit various places across the country, primarily in the Tohoku area, and listen to various thoughts while engaging in direct dialogue with the people we meet in each region.

On Saturday, July 22, 2023, a time-setting workshop for the "Sea of Time – Tohoku" project will be held at "Kamaishi Civic Hall TETTO" in Kamaishi City, Iwate Prefecture.
This marks the first time in four years that an event will be held at Kamaishi Civic Hall TETTO!

Through the time-setting workshop, why not take the opportunity to deeply ponder your thoughts on Tohoku and on each individual life, while conversing with Tatsuo Miyajima, your family, friends, or other participants?
We look forward to your participation.

What is the "Sea of Time – Tohoku" project?

Based on the concepts of "It continues to change," "It connects with everything," and "It lasts forever," this art project is created in collaboration with people living in Tohoku and those who care about Tohoku, with a wish for the repose of the victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake, the continuation of the memories of the disaster, and the co-creation of the future of Tohoku, by contemporary artist Tatsuo Miyajima, known for his works using digital counters.

The artwork, which is envisioned to have 3,000 digital counters displaying numbers from "9 to 1" in a giant pool, involves 3,000 people. Each participant sets the speed at which the LED numbers count down to their desired time. Since 2016, workshops have been held across Japan, mainly in Tohoku, meeting participants, and the project continues with the goal of completing the artwork in 2027.
Currently, the number of participants has reached 2,059 (as of May 15, 2023).

What is "Sea of Time – Tohoku" time setting?

Each of the 3,000 LED numbers in "Sea of Time – Tohoku" counts down at a different speed.
In "Time Setting," participants can set the speed at which the numbers 9, 8, 7, 6... change to their desired number of seconds (from 0.2 seconds to 120.0 seconds).
The LED numbers count down from "9 to 1," then "0" is not displayed and the light goes dark, before returning to "9" and repeating the cycle. This blinking of numbers symbolizes the perpetuity of life.

This is an interactive workshop where Tatsuo Miyajima and participants share episodes related to the time setting seconds and the Great East Japan Earthquake.
As an artist in this project, each participant entrusts their thoughts to one LED through time setting, and these come together to form one large artwork.
