Dialogue-based Time Setting Workshops for high school students and other students in Iwaki City and Shirakawa City, Fukushima Prefecture!
The "Sea of Time - Tohoku" project was initiated by contemporary artist Tatsuo Miyajima after the Great East Japan Earthquake, with the wish to commemorate the victims, pass on the memories of the disaster, and together build the future of Tohoku. It is an art project created in collaboration with people living in Tohoku and those who care about Tohoku. In the time setting workshop, participants set the speed (in seconds) at which the LED numbers, symbolizing the eternity of life, count down, and then share and listen to the thoughts and feelings embedded in those settings.
December is a month to reflect on the past year and gather various thoughts for the new year. Why not take this opportunity to thoughtfully reflect on Tohoku and Fukushima, cherished people and memories, and ponder the future?
We look forward to your participation.

What is the "Sea of Time - Tohoku" project?
"It changes constantly," "It connects with everything," "It continues eternally." Based on these concepts, contemporary artist Tatsuo Miyajima, known for his works using digital counters, created this art project with the wish to commemorate the victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake, pass on the memories of the disaster, and together build the future of Tohoku. It is a collaborative effort with people living in Tohoku and those who care about Tohoku.
The artwork, envisioned as 3,000 digital counters displaying "9 to 1" installed in a giant pool, is created through the involvement of 3,000 people. Each participant sets their desired speed for the LED numbers to count down. Since 2016, workshops have been held across Japan, primarily in Tohoku, meeting participants, and activities continue with the goal of completing the artwork in 2027.
Currently, the number of participants has reached 2,610 (as of November 1, 2024).
What is "Sea of Time - Tohoku" Time Setting?
Each of the 3,000 LED numbers in "Sea of Time - Tohoku" counts down at a different speed.
In "Time Setting," participants can set the speed at which the numbers switch, for example, 9, 8, 7, 6..., to their desired number of seconds (from 0.2 seconds to 120.0 seconds).
The LED numbers count down from "9 to 1." "0" is not displayed; instead, the LED goes dark before returning to "9" and repeating the cycle. This blinking of numbers symbolizes the perpetuity of life.
This workshop is a dialogue-based workshop where Tatsuo Miyajima and participants share the time setting in seconds and anecdotes related to the Great East Japan Earthquake.
As an artist in this project, each participant entrusts their thoughts to one LED through time setting, and these individual contributions come together to form one large artwork.
